Alberta Separatists Campaign for Independence from Canada

Alberta separatists are campaigning for independence from Canada and seeking strategic guidance from political advisers to U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Alberta separatist movement has launched a social media campaign advocating for independence from Canada. The group claims that splitting from the federation would lower taxes, increase individual incomes, reduce the cost of living, and curb immigration levels.

To develop their strategy, the separatists traveled to Washington, D.C. in January to seek advice from political advisers to Donald Trump.

Critics of the movement, including columnist Lorne Gunter, argue that the promised benefits are exaggerated. Gunter asserts that a formal separation would force the province to fund its own defense, border protection, and airport infrastructure to replace existing federal services. He further notes that Alberta would lose the constitutional authority held by Prime Minister Mark Carney to compel other provinces to accept interprovincial pipelines. Pro-federalist groups, such as Forever Canadian led by Thomas Lukaszuk, continue to oppose the separation movement.
