Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas Claims On-Device AI Threatens Data Centers

Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, argues that the shift toward on-device AI represents the primary threat to the viability of centralized data centers. While major tech firms including Google, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI project cloud infrastructure spending to reach nearly $1 trillion by 2030, Srinivas contends that the future of intelligence lies in decentralized models run locally on device chips.

Srinivas asserts that moving inference from the cloud to the device enhances user privacy and allows AI to adapt to individual preferences through test-time training. He compares this potential industry transition to the historical shift from mainframe computers to personal computers.

Perplexity AI is currently implementing this philosophy through the development of the Comet AI browser and new desktop experiences. These products are designed to provide low-latency performance while remaining battery-efficient, aiming to pack intelligence locally to remove the dependency on centralized cloud inference.
