US Energy Department Announces $100 Billion Kentucky AI Hub

The U.S. Department of Energy is transforming a former Kentucky uranium site into a $100 billion AI and computing innovation campus.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced a $100-billion private investment to convert a former Cold War uranium enrichment site in Western Kentucky into the Paducah American Energy Hub. Led by Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, the project will establish an artificial intelligence and high-performance computing innovation campus with a phased buildout targeted for 2032.

Brookfield Asset Management will construct a 1.8-gigawatt data center campus, while NextEra Energy will develop 2 gigawatts of natural gas-fired generation and 2.6 gigawatts of battery energy storage. The initiative is expected to generate 8,000 construction jobs and 600 permanent operations positions.

This development occurs as other large-scale AI infrastructure projects encounter significant obstacles. The Stargate venture, involving Oracle, OpenAI, and SoftBank, has faced debt syndication struggles for sites in Texas and Wisconsin. Additionally, OpenAI paused its Stargate UK project citing regulatory uncertainty and electricity prices, and Oracle's Project Jupiter in New Mexico stalled after failing to secure land-use permits.
