Japan Trend Inflation Hits Three-Year High in September

The Bank of Japan reported a 3.2% rise in trend inflation for September, the fastest annual pace in three years, increasing pressure for future interest rate hikes.

Japan's trend inflation index rose 3.2% in September, marking the fastest annual pace in three years and the largest year-on-year increase since October 2023. The Bank of Japan compiles this index to measure underlying inflation by stripping out institutional factors such as education costs and energy subsidies. This figure represents an acceleration from the 2.6% rise recorded in August.

Service-sector inflation rose 3.7% during the same period. This increase was driven by companies passing on higher labor costs following wage negotiations and a 97.7% surge in ocean freight transport costs. These broadening price pressures strengthen the economic case for future borrowing cost increases.

The central bank is expected to maintain current interest rates at 1.25% during its policy meeting ending Friday. However, officials are likely to signal a readiness to raise rates to combat mounting inflation risks.
