Nikol Pashinyan Defends Armenia's Strategic Pivot Toward European Union

Tensions have escalated between Armenia and Russia over Armenia's strategic shift toward the West. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation accused the Armenian leadership of using the term diversification to mask a pivot toward the European Union. Alexey Fadeev, a deputy director at the ministry, characterized this reorientation as a blatant deception of both the Armenian population and Russia's integration partners, arguing that Armenia's current export difficulties stem from breaking traditional ties rather than Russian restrictions.

Nikol Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, rejected these claims during a visit to Kyrgyzstan on August 7, 2026. Speaking at the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council session, Pashinyan asserted that Armenia has a sovereign right to create alternatives for the republic. While acknowledging that simultaneous membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union is impossible, he urged the EAEU to increase its own competitiveness and attractiveness rather than opposing Armenia's efforts.

Pashinyan further criticized Russia for imposing restrictions on Armenian goods, which he claimed undermines confidence in the trade union. He also dismissed demands from EAEU partners to hold an immediate referendum on EU membership, stating that such a vote would only occur after Armenia officially applies for accession and completes the necessary institutional work.
