Palo Alto Networks CEO Warns of $1 Trillion Security Debt

Nikesh Arora warns enterprises must modernize $1 trillion in legacy cybersecurity infrastructure to safely implement artificial intelligence and counter automated threats.

CEO Nikesh Arora warned enterprises that they must modernize approximately $1 trillion in outdated cybersecurity infrastructure to successfully implement artificial intelligence. Speaking during a post-earnings investor call and a CNBC interview, Arora stated that legacy digital defenses created seven to ten years ago are incapable of countering modern, automated threats that operate at machine speed.

Arora argued that businesses cannot roll out AI without first establishing proper security, as malicious actors now use automated systems to exploit gaps faster than older infrastructure can respond. He identified the launch of Anthropic's Mythos system as a turning point that validated his long-term warnings regarding enterprise unreadiness.

While noting that budget shifts will not occur overnight, Arora asserted that the necessity of this modernization increases the long-term growth rate and duration of the cybersecurity industry.
