Chiltern Railways Enters Public Ownership Amid Strike Threats

Chiltern Railways transitioned to public ownership on September 20 as part of a UK government plan to renationalize major passenger rail services by 2027.

The UK government transitioned Chiltern Railways into public ownership on September 20, 2026. This move is part of a broader initiative to renationalize all major passenger rail services by the end of 2027 and establish Great British Railways as an integrated rail body.

The Department for Transport announced a series of improvements for the line between London Marylebone and Birmingham. Starting in December, the service will add 25 daily trains and 10,000 weekday seats, alongside new trains and upgraded stations. The government also indicated that public ownership provides a new opportunity to deliver the delayed East West Rail services connecting Oxford and Milton Keynes.

Despite these planned upgrades, the transition faces immediate friction. The RMT union is currently balloting its members for strike action and planning demonstrations at London Marylebone station. The dispute centers on the government's support for driver-only operation. Rail Minister Peter Hendy stated that public ownership allows the government to tackle basic service issues, while interim managing director Tony Baxter noted that the move would strengthen industry collaboration.
