Waymo and Toyota Partner to Launch bZ4X Robotaxis

Waymo and Toyota will deploy factory-integrated autonomous bZ4X electric vehicles for robotaxi services in Japan and the United Kingdom starting in 2027.

Waymo and Toyota Motor Corporation have announced a partnership to deploy a fleet of autonomous bZ4X electric vehicles for robotaxi operations in international markets. Under the agreement, Waymo will integrate its self-driving hardware and computing systems directly into the assembly line at Toyota's Takaoka plant in Toyota City, Japan. This factory-integration approach aims to reduce costs and streamline production by eliminating the need for secondary retrofitting used in previous fleets.

Testing and validation of the autonomous bZ4X fleet will begin in Japan in 2027. The companies plan to expand into other right-hand drive markets, specifically the United Kingdom, following the initial Japanese rollout. This effort complements Waymo's existing plans to launch a fully unmanned commercial taxi service in Tokyo in 2027 using Jaguar I-PACE vehicles, which are already being tested in London.

Beyond commercial ride-hailing, the partners intend to explore integrating autonomous technology into personally owned Toyota vehicles. They are also collaborating with Woven by Toyota, Inc. to use telemetry data and traffic infrastructure integration to improve general road safety. This formal agreement follows a preliminary partnership signed in April 2025 to explore autonomous vehicle platforms.
