Berkshire Hathaway Reduces Stake in Dialysis Provider DaVita
Berkshire Hathaway has incrementally sold millions of DaVita shares to lock in gains as the healthcare company's stock rose over 58% this year.
Berkshire Hathaway has incrementally reduced its position in DaVita, a healthcare provider specializing in dialysis services for end-stage renal disease. The investment conglomerate reported net reductions of 1.2 million to 1.6 million shares per quarter during the first and second quarters of 2026, following a peak holding of over 38 million shares in 2020.
Berkshire Hathaway currently holds approximately 28 million shares valued at $5.18 billion. Despite the sales, the conglomerate's ownership percentage remains above 45% because DaVita has aggressively repurchased its own shares, including a $2.2 million buyback in the second quarter. This ownership level exceeds the 30% to 35% threshold Berkshire Hathaway typically maintains to avoid regulatory complexities.
DaVita operates within a U.S. duopoly alongside Germany-based Fresenius Medical Care. The company reported second-quarter revenue of $3.55 billion and earnings per share of $4.02, while its stock price has increased by more than 58% throughout the year.
