Surrendered Militant Groups Launch 72-Hour Strike in Tripura

Surrendered militant organizations, including the National Liberation Front of Tripura and the All Tripura Tiger Force, launched a 72-hour statewide strike in Tripura starting September 4, 2026. The groups blocked the Assam-Agartala national highway at Hataikotor and disrupted railway services to demand the full implementation of a tripartite peace accord signed on September 4, 2024, between the Government of India, the Tripura government, and the Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance.

Protesters issued a list of demands including the protection of former cadres, the withdrawal of police cases against returnees, the adoption of the Roman script for Kokborok, and the transfer of land allotment rights to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. Leaders warned that the shutdown is a preliminary step and they will escalate to an indefinite blockade if the government fails to act.

The strike coincides with a high-level meeting in New Delhi involving Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Manik Saha, and Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Kishore Debbarma to discuss the execution of the agreement. Amidst these tensions, Tipra Motha general secretary Brishaketu Debbarma stated the party will not form alliances for Village Committee elections without written assurances regarding the constitutional rights of indigenous people.
