Google and Unity Launch AI Game-Making Platform Playground
Google launched Playground, an AI-powered platform allowing users to create custom video games using natural language prompts without coding experience.
Google launched Playground, a browser-based experimental platform that enables users to create and customize playable video games using natural language text prompts. Available in the United States for users aged 18 and older, the tool utilizes Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria foundation models to eliminate the need for coding experience. While the platform is free, Google One subscribers receive higher weekly token limits.
Developed in a strategic partnership with Unity Software Inc., the initiative integrates with Google Play Games to support multiplayer matchmaking and leaderboards. Users can share their creations via links or publish them to the Playground Explore gallery. Google intends to highlight standout creations across its network to provide creators with global distribution.
To expand these capabilities, the companies announced Unity Spark, a professional-level AI game-making engine supporting simultaneous collaboration and high-fidelity 3D mechanics. Games created in Unity Spark will be shareable on the Playground platform, with a closed beta for Spark scheduled to begin later this year. These releases follow similar AI game-creation efforts from Meta for its Horizon platform and Roblox's public alpha testing of its Build feature.
