Bangladesh High Court Grants Partial Bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das

The High Court of Bangladesh granted bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das on August 2, 2026, in two of several pending cases. The bail orders, issued by Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher, address charges of attempted murder, vandalism, and obstruction of government duties. Hearings for his remaining bail applications are scheduled for August 16.

Despite the partial bail, Das remains in prison due to other pending charges involving treason and murder. One murder charge stems from the killing of a government prosecutor in Chattogram by activists protesting Das's initial detention. Das, a former ISKCON leader and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote, was first arrested at the Dhaka airport on November 25, 2024, for allegedly insulting the national flag.

That initial arrest triggered violent clashes in Chattogram on November 27, 2024, resulting in the death of lawyer Saiful Islam. The situation has contributed to strained diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh following the August 2024 removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Author and activist Taslima Nasreen protested the arrest, suggesting the government detained Das because of his efforts to unite the Hindu community.

Das has consistently campaigned for minority protection laws, a dedicated ministry of minority affairs, and a specialized tribunal for persecution cases in Bangladesh.
