Electric Vehicle Registrations Surge in New Zealand and Ireland

Electric vehicle registrations grew significantly in October 2026, with New Zealand seeing a 174.1% increase and battery electric vehicles becoming the top choice in Ireland.

Electric vehicle registrations experienced substantial year-on-year growth in October 2026 across New Zealand and Ireland. In New Zealand, the Motor Trade Association reported that registrations for battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids reached 3,317, marking a 174.1% increase compared to October 2025.

This surge in New Zealand is attributed to a sales backlog following petrol price spikes linked to conflict in Iran and a widespread belief that high fuel costs will persist. Larry Fallowfield of the Motor Trade Association noted that the start of the Iran conflict caused initial panic and stock shortages that failed to meet demand.

In Ireland, the Society of the Irish Motor Industry reported 1,092 new battery electric vehicle registrations in October, a 55% increase over the previous year. Battery electric vehicles now account for 27.74% of the new car market share, making them the most popular powertrain for Irish buyers. The Volkswagen ID.4 was the top-selling model for the month. Emma Mitchell of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry attributed this demand to government support and available market offerings.
