Google Launches Selfie Video Account Recovery Feature

Google launched a new account recovery feature called Selfie for sign-in on July 23, 2026. The system provides a biometric authentication route for users who have forgotten their passwords or lost access to trusted devices, complementing existing methods like passkeys and trusted contacts.

To utilize the service, eligible users first record a reference video by performing guided head movements to create an identity template. When a user is locked out of their account, they record a new live video that the system compares against the original. To prevent impersonation via static images or AI-generated deepfakes, the process incorporates liveness checks.

The company is implementing the feature through a phased global rollout via a dedicated sign-in URL. It is currently unavailable for Workspace accounts, child accounts, and those enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program. Google states that the reference videos are encrypted and used solely for sign-in unless users opt in to allow the data to improve facial recognition technology. Users can delete their recordings at any time through account settings.
