Wisconsin Elections Commission Sets Rules for Primary Recounts

The Wisconsin Elections Commission detailed the rules for election recounts following tight primary races on Tuesday. The guidelines come as a Democratic gubernatorial primary remained too close to call as of 11 p.m.

Under the established rules, candidates may request a recount if their margin of loss is within 1% in races with at least 4,000 votes. In races with fewer than 4,000 votes, the margin of loss must be within 40 votes to qualify for a recount.

The commission specified that recounts are provided free of charge if the margin of loss is 0.25% or less. In all other qualifying instances, the candidate must pay the estimated cost of the process before the recount begins.
