Political Violence and Legal Clashes Hit Osun State Election

Political violence has escalated in Osun State ahead of the governorship election scheduled for August 16, 2026. Reports indicate that approximately 29 people have been killed in political clashes, accompanied by unexplained abductions and the arrest of politicians and their supporters. The Nigerian Police Force faces allegations of bias and conducting arbitrary arrests based on political loyalty.

Titilola Adeleke, the First Lady of Osun State, led protests demanding an end to the harassment of political actors and a transparent electoral process. Simultaneously, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is under pressure to prevent vote buying and result manipulation. The ruling Accord Party has specifically urged INEC to review its logistics coordinators to eliminate influence from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Financial tensions between the state and federal governments also peaked when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) placed liens on several Osun State bank accounts over alleged suspicious transfers. While the President later ordered the accounts to be unfrozen, the dispute coincided with the arrest and release of the Secretary to the State Government and a commissioner.

Campaigning remains intense as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) held a rally in Osogbo featuring Atiku Abubakar and Rauf Aregbesola to support candidate Najeem Salam. Meanwhile, the APC continues to campaign for Bola Oyebamiji.
