India Builds Great Nicobar Port to Counter China's Malacca Dilemma

The Government of India is developing the Great Nicobar Project to build a strategic transshipment port and military hub near the Strait of Malacca, directly challenging China's maritime vulnerability.

Government of India is developing the Great Nicobar Project to transform Great Nicobar Island into a strategic maritime and economic hub in the Andaman Sea. The initiative centers on the International Container Transshipment Port at Galathea Bay, supported by an airport, a township, and a power plant. The port site benefits from a natural water depth exceeding 20 meters and sits adjacent to the East-West international shipping route, positioning India to reduce its dependence on foreign transshipment ports including Colombo, Singapore, and Port Klang.

Geopolitically, the project substantially increases India's military and commercial footprint near the Strait of Malacca, one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints. Former Indian Army officer and military diplomat Sanjay Iyer analyzed the project's strategic impact on China, noting it intensifies Beijing's well-known Malacca dilemma — the strategic vulnerability arising because the vast majority of Chinese oil imports and maritime commerce transit this narrow passage. The new Indian infrastructure enables improved monitoring of Chinese Navy movements across the Andaman Sea and broader Southeast Asian waters.

Ashoka University professor Dhruv characterized the project as marking a fundamental shift in India's strategic posture, reflecting a transition toward thinking of itself as a maritime and island power rather than solely a continental one. The Government of India has stated the project seeks to balance this strategic expansion with environmental safeguards and protections for indigenous communities on Great Nicobar Island.
