Azerbaijan Plans 2 Gigawatt Renewable Energy Expansion by 2028

Azerbaijan aims to increase renewable energy's share of electricity generation to 34 percent by 2030 through a 2 gigawatt capacity expansion.

Azerbaijan plans to add 2 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity between 2027 and 2028 to increase the share of renewables in total electricity generation to 34 percent by 2030. Elnur Soltanov, the Deputy Minister of Energy, announced the targets during the 9th Sustainable Development Goals Dialogue in Baku, noting that the current share stands at 21.5 percent.

The expansion is expected to attract approximately $2 billion in investment. Masdar, a company from the United Arab Emirates, will act as a key strategic partner and is slated to contribute over 1 gigawatt of the planned capacity by 2028.

Soltanov warned that the existing power grid is unable to accommodate these volumes or provide the necessary flexibility. He emphasized that the government must allocate funds to modernize the grid and implement battery storage systems to avoid large-scale power outages resulting from the intermittent nature of solar and wind energy.
