OpenAI Slashes GPT-5.6 Luna and Terra Model Prices
OpenAI reduced pricing for its GPT-5.6 Luna and Terra models to attract enterprise customers and compete with lower-cost rivals from the U.S. and China.
OpenAI announced significant price reductions for two of its GPT-5.6 AI models, Luna and Terra, to target cost-sensitive enterprise customers and compete with cheaper Chinese and American rivals. The company cut the price of the mid-tier Terra model by 20%, reducing it to $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens. The fastest model, Luna, received a drastic 80% price cut, now costing 20 cents per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens.
OpenAI attributed these reductions to efficiency gains in model design and inference systems, some of which were developed by the most powerful model, Sol. While pricing for Sol remains unchanged, the company introduced a Fast mode for the model that offers speeds up to 2.5 times faster at twice the standard price, replacing the previous Priority Processing option.
These updates respond to a shift in business behavior from maximizing AI usage toward prioritizing returns on investment. The company faces intensifying competition from Google, Anthropic, and Microsoft, as well as Chinese firms like Moonshot AI and Z.ai. Michele Catasta, President and Head of AI at Replit, noted that the affordability and power of GPT-5.6 Luna are unlocking use cases the company did not expect to build for a long time.
