Carla Lockhart Resigns as DUP Officer Over Stormont Dispute

Carla Lockhart resigned as a Democratic Unionist Party officer after leader Gavin Robinson refused to collapse the Northern Ireland Executive over a parade protest.

Democratic Unionist Party MP Carla Lockhart resigned as a party officer following a dispute with party leader Gavin Robinson over the future of the Stormont powersharing executive. Lockhart advocated for the withdrawal of deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly from her post, a move that would automatically remove Sinn Féin First Minister Michelle O'Neill from office.

The rift stems from an allegedly unlawful, unnotified protest on the Garvaghy Road in Portadown last month, which attempted to block an Orange Order parade. The Police Service of Northern Ireland interviewed Michelle O'Neill and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald regarding the event. Lockhart argued that the party must implement profound consequences for these actions, while Robinson rejected the proposal, citing an agreed party position to maintain the Executive and a lack of appetite among leadership to take blame for collapsing the government ahead of an Assembly election.

Lockhart remains a DUP member and MP but declined to endorse Robinson's leadership, stating her confidence lies with the unionist desire for action. Robinson expressed regret over the resignation but maintained that Lockhart remains a key part of the party team. The resignation has sparked speculation regarding a potential defection to the Traditional Unionist Voice or a move to sit as an independent.
