Supreme Court Halts Andhra Pradesh Urban Local Body Elections
The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission halted elections for 100 urban local bodies following a Supreme Court order regarding nomination violence and intimidation.
The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) halted the election process for 100 urban local bodies, including 13 municipal corporations and 87 municipalities and nagar panchayats, on October 22, 2026. The action follows a Supreme Court of India directive issued after the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) petitioned the court, alleging that candidates faced violence, threats, and intimidation that prevented them from filing nominations.
Reports of physical attacks and the destruction of nomination papers were specifically noted in districts such as Kadapa, Tirupati, and Punganur. The Supreme Court ordered the SEC to postpone the publication of the final candidate list until October 25 and required the commission to determine by October 22 whether to extend nomination deadlines in affected areas. If an extension is granted, the court specified it must be for at least 48 hours.
State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha directed district officials to provide reports to inform the commission's decision. While the YSRCP continues to claim widespread obstruction, Telugu Desam Party President Palla Srinivasa Rao stated the government would abide by the court's orders, though he noted the final decision on extensions rests solely with the SEC.
