Canada Provides $21.1 Million for Métis Housing in Ontario

Minister Rebecca Alty announced a $21.1 million funding increase for the Métis Nation of Ontario to expand affordable housing across the province.

Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Rebecca Alty announced a $21.1 million funding top-up for the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) on October 23, 2026. The announcement occurred during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Midland, Ontario, for a new development of 14 two-storey affordable homes for Métis citizens.

The Midland project was supported by $4.2 million from the federal Urban, Rural and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy. The new investment increases the total federal allocation for the MNO beyond a previous $31.9 million. These funds are designated for the Midland project, new housing units in Kenora, and planning for future construction in priority regions for low- to moderate-income households.

This funding is part of a broader $4-billion federal investment in Indigenous housing, with approximately $1.7 billion delivered through the agency Build Canada Homes. Margaret Froh, President of the MNO, noted that the Métis government led the Midland development from land purchase through construction based on citizen needs.
