Justice Department Targets Small-Scale SNAP Fraud in New Initiative

The United States Department of Justice has shifted its enforcement priorities to target small-scale fraud within government-funded programs, specifically the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This initiative, directed by the White House, includes a new fraud division that reports directly to Vice President JD Vance. As part of this strategy, senior Justice Department official Aakash Singh has mandated that assistant U.S. attorneys maintain at least 25 open cases.

Recent enforcement actions led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement include criminal charges against Esmeralda Soriano, a food truck owner in Santa Ana, California, for redeeming over $600,000 in benefits, and Jesse Cervantes-Gomez, a Los Angeles cashier accused of exchanging food stamps for cash. These cases involve sums that typically fall below traditional federal prosecution thresholds.

Department officials defend the shift, arguing that state and local agencies have failed to curb such fraud and that ignoring low-level offenders sends the wrong message. Conversely, critics and former prosecutors claim the policy diverts essential resources away from complex corporate and Wall Street crimes, pointing to a decline in white-collar prosecutions under the current administration.
