OpenAI Executive Fidji Simo Steps Down Due to Chronic Illness
Fidji Simo is transitioning from her full-time role as CEO of AGI deployment at OpenAI to a part-time advisor following a medical leave.
OpenAI executive Fidji Simo announced on July 9, 2026, that she is stepping down from her full-time role as CEO of AGI deployment to become a part-time advisor. The decision follows a medical leave that began in April 2026 due to a severe exacerbation of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a chronic neuroimmune condition Simo has managed for seven years. Simo stated that her recovery has been longer and more complex than anticipated, noting that her symptoms became as loud as she was stubborn.
Simo was a central figure in transforming OpenAI from a research organization into a commercial entity. Her responsibilities, which included overseeing the consumer-facing business, the introduction of ads to ChatGPT, and the launch of a coding-focused super-app for white-collar workers, will be divided among President Greg Brockman, CFO Sarah Friar, and Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon. Brockman, who managed product responsibilities during Simo's leave, will continue to lead the company's product business and most profitable projects.
This transition occurs as OpenAI prepares for an initial public offering potentially as soon as this year. Simo's exit is part of a broader trend of executive departures at the company, including former COO Brad Lightcap, CMO Kate Rouch, and research lead Kevin Weil. CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman both expressed gratitude for Simo's contributions to the company's mission and her personal friendship.
