Sami Sadat Orders United Front Offensive Against Taliban

The Government of Afghanistan, led by the Taliban, is facing intensified internal and external pressure as it nears the five-year anniversary of its return to power. In a significant security breach, the regime briefly lost control of the Yaftal-e Payeen district capital in Badakhshan province, marking the first such loss since August 2021.

Former Afghan army general Sami Sadat escalated the conflict on August 2, 2026, by ordering the United Front to begin nationwide military operations against the Taliban. This offensive coincides with ongoing attacks from the Islamic State, including a high-profile explosion in Kabul in January.

Simultaneously, the regime is engaged in cross-border hostilities with Pakistan that resulted in at least 372 civilian deaths in early 2026. The Taliban accuse Pakistan of harboring opposition groups, while Pakistan alleges the regime provides safe havens for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan militants.
