New Zealand Retailers Boost Seasonal Hiring Amid Spending Slump
Retail NZ is urging early seasonal hiring as casual vacancies jump 85 percent, despite data showing a decline in consumer spending due to rising costs.
Retailers in New Zealand are accelerating seasonal hiring and inventory stocking to prepare for the December quarter, the most critical trading period of the year. Data from the job platform Zeil shows that Christmas casual vacancies have increased by 85 percent year-on-year, prompting calls for jobseekers to submit applications immediately while head office teams process thousands of requests.
Retail NZ has launched a Christmas Hub providing employment contract templates and webinars to help businesses maximize the festive season. Chief Executive Carolyn Young stated that early hiring is essential to ensure seasonal teams are properly trained before the peak shopping surge, which includes upcoming events like Halloween, Singles Day, and Black Friday.
Despite the hiring surge, consumer spending data indicates a cautious market. Paymark reported that September retail spending fell 1.3 percent compared to the previous year, following a 1.8 percent drop in August. Retailers attribute this decline to rising fuel costs and an increase in the Official Cash Rate, which rose 50 basis points to 2.75 percent over the last three months. Retail NZ warns that households lack spare money for discretionary spending, which may lead shoppers to delay or forego purchases during the holiday period.
