Anthropic Reports Australian Users Underutilize Claude Coding Tools
Anthropic reports that Australian customers use Claude for back-office tasks more than coding, presenting an opportunity for local businesses to build internal software.
AI company Anthropic PBC reports that its customers in Australia are lagging behind global peers in utilizing the coding capabilities of the Claude chatbot. Theo Hourmouzis, the company's general manager for Australia and New Zealand, noted during a National Australia Bank Ltd. event that Australian users over-index on pragmatic back-office work, such as inventory management and invoicing, compared to global averages.
Data shows basic task usage in Australia stands at 5.8%, exceeding the global average of 4.7%. Hourmouzis described the under-utilization of coding tools as a "real opportunity" for small and medium-sized businesses to develop their own internal software and tooling. This follows the May release of Claude for Small Business on the Claude Cowork platform, which Hourmouzis called an "absolute game changer" for smaller firms.
Despite the gap in coding adoption, the company previously noted in March that overall adoption of Claude in Australia was more than four times higher than population-based expectations.
