Taiwan Reports Surge in Chinese Maritime Grey-Zone Activity

The Taiwan Coast Guard and the Ministry of National Defence reported a significant escalation in Chinese military and government vessel activity throughout June and July 2026. In June, Taiwan detected 263 Chinese ships, including coast guard, rescue, and research vessels, representing a sharp increase from 200 in May. Specifically, sightings of coast guard and research boats rose 83% from May and 120% compared to June 2025.

These operations include new law enforcement patrols east of Taiwan, where the China Coast Guard has begun radioing cargo ships for crew and destination information. Taiwanese officials characterize these actions as lawfare and an anaconda strategy intended to establish a legal basis for territorial claims and rehearse a blockade to sever Pacific supply lines. This maritime pressure coincides with aerial incursions; on July 19 and 20, the Ministry of National Defence detected multiple People's Liberation Army aircraft and navy vessels, with several aircraft crossing the median line into Taiwan's northern Air Defense Identification Zone.

In response, Taiwan is planning live drills and tabletop exercises involving the navy to protect lifeline sea routes against quasi-war scenarios. President Lai Ching-te has urged his party to oppose these actions to protect the island's democratic way of life. These tensions persist amid diplomatic efforts, including conversations between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding bilateral relations.
