Pete Hegseth Blocks Army Promotions and Plans Leadership Shift

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth blocked the promotions of four Army officers to one-star rank, extending a trend of removing at least 45 officers from promotion lists this year. Defense officials state these actions target officers linked to former Army Chief of Staff Randy George and former Europe commander Christopher T. Donahue, both of whom were removed from their posts.

More than half of the officers blocked from promotion are female or Black, raising questions about the merit-based nature of the process. General Christopher LaNeve, the nominee for Army Chief, expressed frustration over the blocking of qualified officers. These personnel shifts have created a leadership vacuum as the Army attempts to modernize its defenses against AI and drone threats.

Concurrent with these purges, Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll may soon leave the administration. Hegseth intends to nominate Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell as the new Army Secretary, despite Parnell's history of legal disputes and controversies.
