Voters Report Ballot Delays and Drop Box Failures

Election officials in Sonoma and Luzerne counties are addressing reports of missing mail-in ballots and malfunctioning high-tech drop boxes ahead of the November 3 election.

Election officials in two states are managing logistical failures as the November 3 election approaches. In Sonoma County, residents have reported missing or delayed mail-in ballots, sparking concerns over voter disenfranchisement. Evelyn Mendez, the Sonoma County Registrar of Voters, noted a higher than usual volume of calls regarding missing ballots, which she attributed partly to voter anxiety. While some residents in Glen Ellen claimed a postal worker mentioned 420 missing ballots, the United States Postal Service denied any delivery delays or backlogs in San Francisco or Petaluma.

To mitigate these issues, Sonoma County is opening seven vote centers on October 24, eventually expanding to 32 centers by October 31 to provide replacement ballots and in-person voting. U.S. Representative Jared Huffman urged voters to be vigilant and contact the Registrar's office if they have not received their materials.

Meanwhile, in Luzerne County, officials are addressing malfunctions with a high-tech drop box provided by Runbeck Election Services. Voters and local officials reported that the machine's narrow slot caused frequent jams. Councilwoman Denise Williams criticized the equipment as not user-friendly, suggesting a return to basic models. Election Director Emily Cook stated that the vendor has been notified and that staff are ready to clear jams as they are reported.
