Lao National Assembly President Sonexay Siphandone visited Vietnam to strengthen legislative cooperation, digital transformation, and strategic cohesion between the two nations.
Lao National Assembly President Sonexay Siphandone conducted an official visit to Vietnam on November 3 to strengthen legislative cooperation and bilateral ties following his election to the presidency on October 5, 2026. The visit focused on establishing a new phase of coordination in law-making, supreme oversight, and national decision-making.
During the visit, Siphandone met with Politburo Member Tran Cam Tu in Hanoi to discuss enhancing strategic cohesion. The leaders agreed to expand cooperation in trade, investment, and economic sectors, while linking these efforts to defense, security, and border safety. They also prioritized infrastructure and transport connectivity and planned activities for the Vietnam-Laos Year of Friendship and Solidarity 2027.
Legislative goals for the visit include promoting high-level agreements and coordinating at multilateral forums like the Inter-Parliamentary Union and ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly. A primary objective for the Lao National Assembly is accelerating digital transformation by adapting Vietnam's experience in digitizing documents and managing official records. Additionally, both leaders called for deeper information exchange between Party advisory agencies regarding personnel affairs and political system building.
