OpenAI reached a milestone of $3 billion in worldwide consumer spending for its ChatGPT mobile application as of December 2025. Data from Appfigures indicates that the majority of this revenue was generated in 2025, with consumers spending approximately $2.48 billion. This represents a 408% increase over the $487 million spent in 2024.
The application achieved this spending mark in 31 months, a pace that outstripped other major apps including TikTok, Disney+, and HBO Max. Revenue is primarily driven by paid subscriptions, such as ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Pro. To expand its monetization strategy, OpenAI recently launched its own app store.
Other artificial intelligence competitors are pursuing varying growth strategies. xAI's Grok has shown a revenue trajectory similar to ChatGPT, while Anthropic is prioritizing the business market with a projected revenue goal of $70 billion by 2028.
