South Africa and Zimbabwe Agree on Infrastructure and Migration Projects

South Africa and Zimbabwe identified priority trade projects and migration management strategies during the Fourth Session of their Bi-National Commission in Pretoria.

South Africa and Zimbabwe concluded the Ministerial Segment of the Fourth Session of the South Africa–Zimbabwe Bi-National Commission in Pretoria on Thursday. Ronald Lamola, South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, co-chaired the session to identify high-impact priority projects aimed at boosting trade and regional integration.

Key initiatives include the construction of the Third Limpopo Bridge, the operationalization of the Beitbridge One Stop Border Post, and the development of a fertilizer manufacturing plant. The two nations also agreed to deepen cooperation on water security, agriculture, and the modernization of road and rail infrastructure. To ensure accountability, the countries will deploy an electronic monitoring system to track the implementation of these decisions.

Addressing recent anti-migration protests in South Africa, the commission discussed managing migration in a lawful and humane manner while rejecting xenophobia. Lamola advocated for a regional system where mobility is driven by opportunity rather than economic compulsion. The session included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Diplomatic Training and will culminate in a meeting between the leaders of both countries on Friday to sign formal cooperation agreements.
