Kyrgyzstan Assumes TURKPA Chairmanship and Strengthens Azerbaijan Ties

Kyrgyzstan took over the TURKPA chairmanship from Kazakhstan while President Sadyr Japarov met with Azerbaijan's parliamentary speaker to expand strategic bilateral cooperation.

Kyrgyzstan assumed the chairmanship of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic States (TURKPA) from Kazakhstan during Council sessions in Bishkek on October 20. Marlen Mamataliev, chairman of the Jogorku Kenesh, formally received the leadership from Aibek Dadebay, chairman of Kazakhstan’s Kurultai.

Mamataliev established a leadership agenda focused on digital transformation, including the creation of legislation for artificial intelligence. His priorities also include expanding economic and transport links and increasing the participation of women and youth in parliamentary processes.

Simultaneously, President Sadyr Japarov held meetings with Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis, to deepen the strategic partnership between the two nations. The discussions centered on the Treaty on Allied Relations signed in July 2026 during a state visit by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Japarov and Gafarova focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in energy, transport, investment, and trade, emphasizing the dynamic growth of their interparliamentary ties.
