Liberal Democrat MPs Resign to Challenge Ed Davey's Leadership

Liberal Democrat MP Charlie Maynard resigned from the frontbench on Friday to attempt to unseat party leader Ed Davey amid falling poll numbers.

Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Charlie Maynard resigned from the frontbench on Friday in an effort to unseat party leader Ed Davey. Maynard's departure follows the earlier resignation of care and carers spokesperson Alison Bennett. The challenge is driven by frustration over the party's decline in national opinion polls, where it has fallen behind Reform UK and the Greens, as well as disagreements over Davey's defense of the pension triple lock.

Deputy leader Daisy Cooper and former leader Tim Farron defended Davey, pointing to his success in the 2024 general election. However, critics such as council leader Julian Brazil argued the party is sleepwalking into irrelevance.

Under party rules, a leadership contest requires a majority vote of no confidence from MPs. Potential candidates must also secure nominations from 200 members across 20 local parties and 10% of the parliamentary party to run for the leadership.
