UK Water Companies Impose Hosepipe Bans Amid Dry Weather

Essex and Suffolk Water and Wessex Water have implemented hosepipe bans across their regions to protect water resources during prolonged dry conditions.

Water utility providers in the United Kingdom are implementing restrictive measures to combat water resource pressure caused by prolonged dry weather. Essex and Suffolk Water extended a Temporary Use Ban on hosepipes that first began on August 3, warning that dry conditions may persist into the autumn. The company is prioritizing the repair of leaks and bursts, having fixed over 4,150 incidents since January, and is investing £66 million between 2025 and 2030 to improve network resilience.

In a separate regional action, Wessex Water imposed a temporary hosepipe ban across its supply area in Somerset effective August 18. The restrictions prohibit residents and businesses from using hosepipes for watering gardens, cleaning vehicles, filling swimming pools, or cleaning outdoor surfaces. While the use of buckets or watering cans is permitted for some activities, filling ornamental fountains and paddling pools remains banned.

Wessex Water allows the use of rainwater, grey water, or private boreholes via hosepipes and provides exceptions for those with medical or mobility needs. Individuals who violate the Somerset restrictions face fines of up to £1,000.
