Sam Altman Urges Expansion of Chips Act Tax Credits

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman requested the U.S. government extend Advanced Manufacturing Investment Credits to include AI server production and data centers.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane requested that the United States government expand the eligibility of the Advanced Manufacturing Investment Credit (AMIC), a tax incentive established under the Chips Act. The request seeks to extend these credits to cover AI server production, AI data centers, and grid components to support broader U.S. re-industrialization.

OpenAI has committed $1.4 trillion to develop computational resources over the next eight years. While the company has previously engaged in discussions regarding federal loan guarantees for chip factories, it has not sought such guarantees for data centers. Altman characterized the requested tax credits as being different from loan guarantees.

White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks rejected the proposal, stating there would be no federal bailout for the AI industry.
