North Carolina Permits Amazon Data Center Backup Generators

The North Carolina Division of Air Quality issued two air quality permits for an Amazon data center project in Richmond County. The first permit authorizes Amazon to operate 588 backup generators for maintenance and power outages, while the second allows Duke Energy to operate 57 diesel generators for one year during the construction phase.

The decision follows a public hearing attended by more than 200 residents. Community members expressed concern that splitting the generators across two separate permits would increase smog emissions in surrounding neighborhoods. Residents also pointed out that the nearest state-monitored air quality sensor is located in neighboring Montgomery County, rather than within the project's immediate vicinity.

Reid Wilson, secretary of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, acknowledged the public concern but stated the department will ensure both companies comply with all permit requirements.
