The Lancet Commission on 21st-century global threats to health identified 17 threats that could lead to human extinction by 2100. The commission specifically warned that the malicious use of artificial intelligence, nuclear conflict followed by nuclear famine, and the creation of AI-driven bioweapons carry risks of extinction within the next 75 years.
Other primary threats listed in the report include pandemics, climate change, and armed conflict. The commission detailed how AI could be weaponized to infiltrate nuclear warfare triggers to launch simultaneous warheads, attack global healthcare support systems, or generate political deepfakes to incite conflict between nations and populations.
Despite these catastrophic projections, the authors of the report stated that there is still time to prevent these events from occurring.
