Iran and Turkiye Agree to Build $1.6 Billion Rail Link

The governments of Iran and Turkiye have agreed to construct a joint rail link to serve as a strategic trade gateway between Asia and Europe. The project, known in Iran as the Marand-Cheshmeh Soraya railway transit line, will cover approximately 200 kilometers and run toward Turkiye's Aralik border region.

Officials estimate the project will cost $1.6 billion and take three to four years to complete. The line aims to transform a section of the ancient Silk Road into an all-rail corridor to ensure continuity between China and Europe. Iranian officials stated the network will provide fast and cheap transport for all types of cargo with minimal stops.

During a joint press conference on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized the need to remove barriers to trade and investment between the two nations. Araghchi noted the importance of the rail link in the region and expressed hope that construction can begin as soon as possible.
