IMO and Arab Parliament Condemn Houthi Red Sea Tanker Attacks

International Maritime Organization Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez and the Arab Parliament condemned renewed attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea following a series of security incidents on July 23, 2026. The violence included an attack by an unknown projectile that caused a tanker to catch fire off the coast of Saudi Arabia, an event reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations.

Yemen's Houthi group claimed responsibility for a military operation targeting two Saudi oil tankers in the region. Dominguez described the attacks as indefensible, warning that they threaten global supply chains, freedom of navigation, and the lives of seafarers. He called for the unconditional release of captive seafarers and urged immediate de-escalation to prevent further maritime pollution in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.

Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, also denounced the Houthi strikes, asserting that the attacks threaten vital waterways and global energy supplies. Al Yamahi expressed the Arab Parliament's solidarity with Saudi Arabia and urged the international community to implement firm measures to restore regional stability and ensure maritime security.
