Indian Rupee Hits Six-Week High After RBI Intervention and Jio IPO

The Reserve Bank of India and foreign inflows from the Jio Platforms IPO pushed the rupee to a six-week high of 94.43 against the US dollar.

The Reserve Bank of India intervened last week and through October 21 to curb the depreciation of the Indian rupee. The central bank sold dollars and established a special facility to provide dollars directly to state-run oil companies, effectively redirecting demand away from the spot market. To further discourage speculation, the RBI tightened foreign exchange derivative rules to increase the cost of speculative dollar positions and importer hedges.

These regulatory measures coincided with a massive surge in foreign currency inflows driven by the Jio Platforms initial public offering. The ₹30,213-crore public offer became the fastest-ever subscribed IPO, reaching full subscription within 100 minutes of opening. This combination of central bank action and private investment pushed the rupee to a six-week high, closing at 94.43 against the U.S. dollar on October 21.

Despite the rally, the currency remains under pressure from structural bearish trends. Gains were capped by a firm U.S. dollar, weak domestic equity markets—including declines in the Sensex and Nifty—and elevated Brent crude oil prices. Crude prices climbed above $110 per barrel due to tensions in West Asia, increasing the demand for dollars to fund energy imports. Analysts suggest the rupee's stability now depends on continued IPO-related inflows and the movement of U.S. Treasury yields.
