European Gas Prices Rise as Germany Boosts Winter Reserves
European gas prices increased on September 17 as the German government ordered increased purchases to address low storage levels ahead of winter.
European gas prices rose on September 17, 2026, with the Dutch TTF contract increasing 0.45% to 78.37 euros per megawatt-hour. This price hike occurred despite a simultaneous decline in oil prices, which were driven by expectations that Saudi Arabian supplies would return to the global market sooner than previously anticipated.
Low storage levels, particularly within Germany, are sustaining the upward pressure on gas prices as the region prepares for winter. In response to these depleted inventories, the Federal Government of Germany directed its state-owned gas trader to increase purchases to build up necessary reserves.
