Tata Steel Wins Interim Relief Over ₹1,755 Crore Coal Demand

Tata Steel Limited received interim relief from the Revisional Authority under the Ministry of Coal regarding a ₹1,755.10 crore demand raised by the Jharkhand government. The protection bars state authorities from taking coercive action against the company while its revision application remains pending.

The dispute began on March 30, 2026, when the District Mining Office in Ramgarh issued a demand notice alleging that the company extracted approximately 1.62 crore metric tonnes of coal beyond permissible limits at the West Bokaro Colliery between FY2000-01 and FY2006-07. Tata Steel challenged the notice on April 24, arguing that the demand lacks justification and substantive basis.

Following a hearing on August 20, the Revisional Authority admitted the application for consideration. While the order provides temporary protection from enforcement, it does not set aside the financial demand, which the authority continues to review.
