Pro-Regulation AI Candidates Win Key U.S. Congressional Races
Candidates favoring stricter artificial intelligence oversight won key U.S. congressional seats following a $110 million midterm funding effort by AI safety advocates.
Public First, a pro-regulation political funding group, spent over $63 million to help elect candidates favoring stricter artificial intelligence oversight in the U.S. midterm elections. The group, backed by Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei and other AI safety advocates, was part of a broader $110 million funding effort to shift the legislative landscape toward AI regulation.
Ten of the 17 congressional candidates supported by the group won their races. Among the victors are Manny Rutinel of Colorado and Scott Wiener of California, both of whom previously authored sweeping AI laws at the state level. The funding push responded to growing public unease regarding the rapid development and deployment of AI technology.
