Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Leads G20 Finance Meeting

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is leading a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors in Asheville, North Carolina, to advance the economic priorities of the Trump administration. Bessent is urging member nations to reduce global trade imbalances and boost growth, while specifically demanding that countries sever business ties with Iran. He warned that the United States would impose secondary sanctions on any nations continuing to trade with Tehran.

The summit takes place amid heightened tensions over U.S. trade policy. In July, the United States imposed tariffs on 60 economies for failing to enforce forced labor laws, and further tariffs targeting excess industrial capacity remain pending. While the U.S. is attempting to shift the G20's focus toward energy production and private sector innovation, other members are prioritizing the economic fallout from the Iran war and the surge of Chinese exports into European markets.

Bessent is also working to stabilize markets in response to rising U.S. debt, which surpassed $40 trillion on August 19, and increasing 30-year bond yields. The meeting highlights a divide between U.S. objectives and the concerns of the European Union and other members regarding Chinese industrial subsidies.
