South Korea Online Shopping Hits 24.21 Trillion Won in August
South Korea's online shopping grew 7.3 percent in August, driven by high demand for new Samsung smartphones and Tesla vehicles.
Online shopping in South Korea grew 7.3 percent year-on-year in August, reaching a total volume of 24.21 trillion won, or 17.8 billion U.S. dollars. According to data from the Ministry of Data and Statistics, the growth was primarily fueled by a 44.9 percent surge in demand for mobile devices following the release of new Samsung Electronics smartphones.
Other sectors saw notable gains, including a 12.7 percent increase in online sales for cars and car accessories, which the ministry attributed to Tesla purchases. Travel and transportation services rose 8.7 percent during the peak summer vacation season, while e-coupon services grew by 9.3 percent.
Mobile commerce continues to dominate the market, with transactions via smartphones and tablets accounting for 78.1 percent of the total online shopping volume. This represents a 5.8 percent increase over the previous year.
