Local Government Leaders Oppose Rates Caps at SuperLocal Conference

Local Government New Zealand leaders demanded reform clarity and opposed proposed rates caps during the SuperLocal conference in Rotorua.

Local government leaders gathered in Rotorua for the Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) SuperLocal conference to demand clarity on central government reforms and oppose proposed rates caps. Local Government New Zealand released polling data showing that while 51 percent of the public supports rates capping, that support drops to the mid-thirties if caps lead to lower service standards or reduced infrastructure investment.

Mayor Tania Tapsell stated that councils have been left in limbo by government announcements leading up to the November 7 general election. The conference highlighted a trust gap, with LGNZ polling indicating 54 percent of New Zealanders trust their local councils compared to 24 percent who trust the central government.

Political debate at the event centered on funding and control. Act MP Simon Court argued that councils cannot simply rely on more money to solve cost pressures, while representatives from the Green Party and TOP criticized rates caps as a means of central government control. There was broad agreement on the need for new funding models, including the potential for local authorities to receive a share of GST from growth and development. Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rawiri Waititi emphasized that reforms must not sideline Māori voices in council decision-making.
