National Grid Forecasts Mixed Winter Energy Costs for New York

National Grid projects a slight decrease in natural gas costs but a 3% to 5% increase in electric bills for Upstate New York customers.

National Grid released its winter bill forecast for Upstate New York customers covering November 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027. The utility estimates that typical residential natural gas customers using 713 therms will see a slight decrease in costs, paying approximately $9 less over the season, or $1.80 less per month.

Electric bills are projected to rise by 3% to 5%, an increase of $22 to $39 over the five-month period. In eastern New York, these electric costs are expected to increase by about $4.40 per month. The company attributes these hikes to rate increases granted by the Public Service Commission in 2025, which took effect in early 2026.

National Grid stated that while supply charges are passed directly to customers without markup, delivery charges are used to cover storm response and infrastructure maintenance. To mitigate the impact of higher costs, the utility highlighted assistance programs such as the Care & Share Energy Fund and the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).
