Abhishek Banerjee Alleges BJP Attack After Police Interrogation

Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee alleged that armed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers stormed and vandalized the party's Camac Street office in Kolkata at approximately 4:30 AM on September 3, 2026. Banerjee claimed the attackers destroyed electronic equipment and assaulted staff, while accusing the Kolkata Police of failing to respond to emergency calls for nearly two hours.

This escalation follows a series of disputes beginning on August 27, when supporters and staff at the Camac Street office scuffled with Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and police officials during the removal of an unauthorized billboard. The incident led to three FIRs naming Banerjee, Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien, and other TMC leaders. Charges included attacking personnel and the sexual harassment of female police officers, the latter of which Banerjee denied.

On September 1, Banerjee was questioned for over five hours by the Kolkata police at the Shakespeare Sarani police station regarding the August 27 clash. He characterized the interrogation and the legal actions as "political vendetta" orchestrated by the BJP government. In response to the September 3 attack, Banerjee demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and an investigation into the planning of the raid.
